Hand-building for Beginners and Intermediates September 18th-October 16th

$300.00

September 18th through October 16th

5 weeks

Wednesdays 6pm-9pm

Includes clay, glazes, tools and firing

Instructor: Titia Barnett

What you will learn:

You will be introduced to the main hand-building techniques by working on small projects. We will start with a small pinch pot, a small coil pot, and a small slab project. We will also do a pressmold project using a bowl. All this will give you a feel for the possibilities of clay. You will learn about form and texture, and how to personalize your work.

There will be books available to inspire you even more! Your input and ideas are very important and I will help you to achieve them. After your work dries and is bisque fired, we will go over glazing your pieces. Working in clay is relaxing, exciting and to me addictive and I hope you will have that same experience!

My former students always left with renewed energy, even after a whole day of work.

Instructor Bio

Titia was born in Amsterdam, Holland and moved to California in 1986. She became a teacher first at a college with a beautiful workshop, and all the equipment you can imagine. After teaching middle school (biology and Dutch) and primary school she traveled for a year.

Drawing and sculpture was always her dream, and after taking an evening class in figure drawing, she applied for the sculpture program at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and was accepted. After 2 years of figure sculpture, stone carving in Italy and 2 more years of carving in marble, she got my MFA.

Titia met her husband in Italy in and moved to be with him in CA. She taught ceramics and stone/wood carving as a part-time instructor at Stan State University in California for about 20 years. She retired and continued to teach ceramics at the adult school.

She has made small and large ceramic sculptures, fountains and yard sculptures, animals, portraits and busts in clay and bronze. “Making art is endless and it is my life, I get my inspiration in nature and people around me, their interaction is intriguing. I love texture, my eyes are trained on it....”
